Holding Phone Companies Accountable
On May 24, 2006, the ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri sent a letter to state attorney general Jay Nixon requesting an investigation into whether local phone companies have shared customers' phone records with the NSA. In an independent action two commissioners in Missouri subpoenaed a number of phone companies, but the Department of Justice intervened to stop the investigation, and the case was consolidated with other lawsuits against the phone companies in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in California.
