Holding Phone Companies Accountable
The ACLU of New Jersey filed a complaint on May 24, 2006, for the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to investigate whether Verizon and AT&T have shared customers' phone records with the NSA. The New Jersey attorney general subpoenaed the phone companies for information relating to the complaint, but on June 14, 2006, the Department of Justice intervened to stop the investigation, and the case was consolidated with other lawsuits against the phone companies in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in California.
