Holding Phone Companies Accountable
The ACLU of Oregon filed a request on May 24, 2006, with the Public Services Commission and attorney general Hardy Myers, to investigate whether AT&T, Qwest, and Verizon have shared customers' phone records with the NSA. Both Verizon and Qwest filed motions to dismiss; Qwest also denied sharing information with the NSA. The PSC dismissed claims against Qwest, but denied Verizon's motion to dismiss. The Oregon case is now in abeyance pending the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision in Hepting v. AT&T.
