The ACLU of Rhode Island filed a complaint on May 24, 2006, for the Division of Public Utilities and Carriers to investigate whether Verizon and AT&T have shared customers' phone records with the NSA. The division erroneously closed the complaint when it believed
Hepting v. AT&T ruled in favor of the defendants; the complaint was reopened upon discovery of the error. A stay of proceedings is in place pending the Ninth Circuit Court decision in
Hepting or other "good cause" reasons.
Demanding the Truth About Spying on Peaceful Protestors
The ACLU filed Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for documents relating to the Pentagon's program of spying on peace groups.
