There has never been a more urgent need to preserve fundamental privacy protections and our system of checks and balances than the need we face today, as illegal government spying, provisions of the Patriot Act and government-sponsored torture programs transcend the bounds of law and our most treasured values in the name of national security.

Letter of Anthony D. Romero to Defense Secretary Robert Gates (3/23/2007)

File Attached - click here for more info

ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero sent this letter to Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates on Friday, March 23, regarding Friday's New York Times report that the Secretary believes the Guantánamo Bay prison should be shut down.

At the Guantánamo prison, detainees langush with no access to courts, no meaningful contact with their families and no prospect of being charged and tried. The Constitution makes the president subject to the rule of law. Its drafters rejected dungeons and monarchies and chose a system of due process with limited powers.

Take action today and call on Congress to shut down the facility that has become a tragic and dangerous symbol in the eyes of our enemies and our allies alike >>
