A U.S. District Court Judge ruled that National Security Letters (NSLs), secret demand letters that require communications providers and financial institutions to provide Americans’ private information to federal law enforcement without a court order, are unconstitutional.  The court held that the gag order associated with NSLs, which prohibit a recipient from discussing the order publicly, violates the First Amendment.
