ACLU Teams up with Lewis Black to Encourage Students and Young People to Defend Civil Liberties (01/28/2005)
The American Civil Liberties Union is sponsoring Lewis Black's sold-out show tomorrow at San Francisco's historic Warfield Theater to encourage students and young people to take a stand in defending their civil liberties. The show is the latest endeavor in the ACLU's youth outreach initiative.

LOS ANGELES - Under pressure from the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, the University of California announced that it will no longer tell students studying abroad that they are prevented from participating in political demonstrations, the ACLU said today.

Virginia School Board Votes to Allow Students to Sit During Pledge of Allegiance (01/11/2005)
RICHMOND, VA--Under pressure from the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia -- and based on recommendations from its own lawyers -- the Spotsylvania County School Board last night voted to remove a policy requiring students to stand during recitations of the Pledge of Allegiance.

California Students Informed of Right to Fair Education (01/03/2005)
LOS ANGELES - As students return to school today, a new mandate takes effect requiring all California public schools to post notices informing students and their parents of certain basic education requirements, including access for all students to books and other learning materials, trained teachers, and clean and safe classrooms.

Indiana Civil Liberties Union Awarded Grant for Community Outreach (11/01/2004)
INDIANAPOLIS--The Indiana Civil Liberties Union announced today that it has received a $20,000 grant from the Efroymson Fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation to support the creation of a ""What Are My Rights?"" program for community education and outreach. The grant will allow the ICLU to design and implement a civil liberties curriculum for at-risk high school youth and recent adult immigrants.

ACLU Sues Detroit Hotel Over Age Discrimination (10/20/2004)
DETROIT -The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan today filed an age discrimination lawsuit against a downtown Detroit hotel that refused to rent a room to a 20-year-old Army Reservist and his 18-year-old girlfriend because they were too young.

Michigan Judge Rules Utica School Violated Student Journalist's Free Speech Rights (10/12/2004)
DETROIT - A federal court judge ruled today that a Utica high school violated the First Amendment by censoring an article in the school newspaper written by the paper's student editor, Katherine Dean. Judge Arthur Tarnow ruled from the bench, ending the two-year old lawsuit.

ACLU Defends Navajo Advocate's Right to Criticize School District (08/19/2004)
ALBUQUERQUE--The American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico announced today that it is defending a Navajo man who is being sued by the Central Consolidated School District for defamation over an op-ed he wrote criticizing the district's bilingual education policies.

ACLU Praises Appeals Court Decision Striking Down Pennsylvania's Mandatory Pledge of Allegiance Law (08/19/2004)
PHILADELPHIA -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania today praised an appeals court decision striking down a Pennsylvania law requiring private and public school students to begin each school day by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance or singing the national anthem. The Third Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that law violated the First Amendment rights of students and private schools.

DETROIT -The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan today filed a federal lawsuit challenging a Detroit city policy that allows police and school officials to conduct mass searches of public school students.
