The American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Michigan, and a broad coalition of civil rights, religious, and health organizations are calling on the Michigan Department of Corrections to abandon a degrading body cavity search in which women prisoners are routinely forced to remove all of their clothing and use their hands to spread open their vaginas as a prison guard peers into their vaginal cavities. These searches often occur under unsanitary conditions, and sometimes in full view of other prisoners.
