New voting laws in Florida are making it harder for third parties—organizations like the League of Women Voters and the NAACP, but also individuals, like ministers or teachers-- to register voters in the state. The laws include onerous new requirements, including a 48-hour deadline for turning in completed forms (it used to be 10 days), and big fines for anyone who violates the rules, even unintentionally. Third party registration is an important way to increase voter participation. That's especially true in minority communities, where Blacks and Hispanics are much more likely than whites to through voter registration drives, usually held by third-party groups.
