WASHINGTON - The American Civil Liberties Union called on Congress to support measures to improve electronic voting systems and protect Americans’ full voting rights. In a Senate Rules Committee hearing held today, speakers detailed the need for electronic voting systems such as Direct Recording Electronic machines (DREs) to accurately record, count, tabulate, and report votes.

"The right to vote is a core American freedom," said Caroline Fredrickson, Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office. "Congress must ensure Americans’ votes will be accurately recorded and counted. Electronic voting machines can and must be designed so they are accessible to all eligible voters, including those with disabilities and members of language minority groups, and must offer a reliable means of conducting a true, independent recount.

"The ACLU urges Congress to address the current electronic voting systems in order to protect both our access to the ballot and the reliability of the American voting system."
