Owens' current work addresses issues of incarceration, for those impacted by the US prison system. The “Go Back” series conceptually deals with what is visible to prisoners from their specific vantage point.



About the Artist

Jared Owens

Jared Owens is a Manhattan-based artist who works with a variety of media including oils, acrylics, ceramics, and reclaimed materials. His career as an Artist began while incarcerated at Fairton, a federal prison located in New Jersey. Incarcerated three times, in three states, and under three jurisdictions, Owens developed his artistic practice in prison by studying art magazines and books, critics’ reviews in newspapers and encyclopedias and by collaborating with fellow prisoners. Owens was released from federal prison in 2013, Owen’s work has been included in several institutional exhibitions including Rendering Justice at the African American Museum of Art in Philadelphia, O.G. curated by Jesse Krimes and Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration at MoMA PS1, curated by Dr. Nicole Fleetwood. Owens was also featured in The O.G. Experience, in partnership with the SOZE Agency and HBO. Previous gallery exhibitions include Martos Gallery (New York, NY), Little Berlin Gallery (Philadelphia, PA), Mitchell Hill Gallery (Charleston, SC). Owens has received a Restorative Justice grant from Philadelphia Mural Arts in 2019 and Right of Return and Silver Art Projects Fellowships. He is also a Silver Art Projects artist-in-residence at the World Trade Center.
