Because freedom can't protect itself
The problem with shield laws is that 1. A reporter can make things up and blame a 'secret informant' that never existed. 2. A secret informant can libel a person with impunity.
Anon, you are correct and the problem is made worse by the laziness of many journalists today. We must, however, balance that risk against the inability of hard-working, honest journalists to bring out the truth when that truth is critical of the State or one of its representatives.
