Because freedom can't protect itself
Although there are few things I hate more than being woken up by idiots who want to save my soul it's only by protecting their rights that we all remain free. But I still wish that those folks would get lives and leave me alone.
Banning any Religion is a slippery slope that will almost always lead to the state dictating how to believe. Once you do away with freedom of religion, people can start to argue that one or another part of a faith is wrong. If you happen to be in the Majority, Ie Protestant Christian, that may not seem that bad. That is until you realize how much diversity there is within the faith. Do you want the state to decide if you should circumcize your child or if they should be baptized at birth or when they are older and can give consent. Do you want the state to dictate what day you should worship on and what prayers should be said? We could just as easily have a Church of the United States as there was the Church of England if we do not protect the first amendment.Do you want the state to declare an official denomination. It may sound far fetched but the fact is history has shown that once you start to tell people how to believe, the only place you can go is down. We have to protect everyones right to believe any faith. If we don't like people knocking on our doors preaching their faith you can outlaw unsolicited preaching on private property(but not public property). Outlaw the offencive act not the religion.
All this religion stuff is driving me nuts. Do these people honestly believe that they're angering an all-powerful man in space by accepting a blood transfusion? Do they think that by saluting the American flag, they're buying themselves a one-way ticket to Hell, courtesy of a supposedly all-loving deity? When will the madness end?
Russia has no First Amendment. They can do whatever they want. You might want to worry about what's going on in Washington D.C. right now as the communists have occupied the White House.
Joel, Thanks for being a voice for freedom! It's a well-written blog. Thanks! Owen
anon #3...all religions contain beliefs that outsiders consider nutty. If you are an atheist or agnostic, you understand this and need to be more tolerant lest you drive yourself insane. If you hold religious beliefs, try to recognize how silly your comments are in light of some of your beliefs. It will be difficult as you have been raised to hold those nutty beliefs as absolute truth, just as the JWs have.
Even though we may be annoying we do what we believe is right, as everyone does. All i know is that people are dying in Russia as i type this because of what we believe. Does anyone see a reiteration of an important event in history reoccuring? I just hope everyone is safe and well...
Excellent blog post!
