Because freedom can't protect itself
I have had two sons subjected to the system of private prisons. Both on charges that are not relevant to how the system treats them and family members. Restrictive calling systems that make collects calls to your own already paid, phone service not allowed without payment to another phone service that charges two and three times more than national rates for the same service. This amounts to extortion or usury of persons that are still innocent until proven guilty. Most do not have enough money to post bond and so the fees compound and when found innocent of charges these are not refunded to the inmates. Time from jobs, school, and home are not even considered or compensated for unless you want to go back to civil court. Do you know anyone who had recovered any of this loss?

This is no accident. It was a full blown business plan, including the legal changes which lengthened sentences and criminalized a large sector of our population.
