Because freedom can't protect itself
I love what the ACLU did in the Davis school book restriction. I want everyone to be equal. I don't want anyone discriminated against. I want America to be a place where everyone is free. We're not yet. But the ACLU will change that.
""I am happy that all parents will now have the chance to make their own decisions about their own children." We couldn’t agree more."
I don't actually feel that I am given the chance to make decisions about my own children when they are at school. When they select library books, no one is there guiding them as they select an appropriate book to check out. If I have moral issue with the books in the library (imagine if there were a book about a subject YOU felt you didn't want YOUR children to be subject to), I am not there to help them make appropriate choices, like I can be at a public library. I have no problem with whatever books we want to make available at public libraries, but I would like there to be more discretion at a school library where innocent children are left to themselves to read whatever is in front of them.
I can't even look at a picture on the Internet without being raided by a SWAT team, but you folks don't care about that. You are too busy worrying about one or two books at one school.

If you're terribly worried about what books your kids will find in the school library, you have some options:
1. Forbid them to get school library books and provide them with enough books yourself that they don't need to.
2. Teach them what is appropriate (although we wouldn't agree on what that is; I welcome my kids to read anything and everything they like) so they can make choices you'd approve of.
3. Homeschool them so you can control everything they are exposed to.
4. Let them grow and learn- your worldview isn't the only one, and doesn't have to be theirs.
Hey SWAT raided person - MOVE or change the situation.
To others who only complain about what the school is doing/not doing for your kids: get off your butts and BE A PARENT. Get involved. Go to PTA meetings.
And to the poster above - #4 is GOLD! You Rock!

To Anonymous #5: YOU ROCK! I agree 100% with #4 in your list. I grew up after I moved away from the narrow, bigoted view I was raised with. I still love my mother, but I will not be dictated by her choice to hate.
disgusting!!!!! Trash like this should not be around public schools
