Because freedom can't protect itself
Here are a couple of interesting facts regarding the killing of Jose Guerena that are directly attributable to the militarization of local police/sheriffs.
A Bearcat was the vehicle of choice used to execute 4 Search (not Arrest) Warrants on May 5, 2011 in Tucson, Az. Rock music can be heard playing in the Bearcat as it approached Jose's home.
The SWAT Team shot at Jose until their weapons were empty or jammed. 71 rounds were shot, 22 hitting Jose. The autopsy showed no kill shot. Jose received no medical attention and was allowed to bleed to death. 1 hour and 14 minutes after he was shot the SWAT Team finally entered his home. Jose was pronounced dead by a doctor who was watching transmissions from a robot.
Jose had never been under surveillance. According to the Affidavit in Support of the Warrant, NONE of the 4 homes or ANY of the suspects had been under surveillance during the previous 19 months.
After the killing, the Pima County Sheriff's Department realized they had killed an innocent Marine who had served 2 combat tours in Iraq. The Sheriff's Department immediately began a campaign to wrap all the 'suspects' in dealing illegal drugs. They became a 'Cartel' with not a shred of proof. According to the Sheriff's Dept. spokesperson there were no drugs found in Jose's home. The Warrant was sealed so there is still no proof that anything illegal was found in any of the 4 homes. The Sheriff's Dept. did leak a few items that they thought proved they were dealing with a drug ring......bullet proof vests and a Border Patrol cap. The vests were from Jose's combat tours (they are not reused because the heat & sweat degrade them) and the cap can be purchased at many local stores. Jose may have been given the cap when he applied for a job with BP.
The Support Document is without any substance. A 1st year law student would think it was a joke and an ACLU lawyer would cry. Everything that has been done since the killing has been to cover the total incompetence of the Sheriff's Department. This should never happen to any citizen in America.
Jose Guerena's death was the result of law enforcement having military vehicles, robots and weapons. These items have become toys for local law enforcement to use against citizens. Jose's neighborhood was invaded by a Bearcat (like a military tank), the neighborhood was shot-up by law enforcement with bullets hitting surrounding homes, and 2 robots were used to push and prod the victim of some of those bullets. Jose must have thought, before he died, that he was in Fallujah, Iraq.
