Jeff Sessions Is Aiding and Abetting Police Departments Who Want to Seize Property of People Convicted of No Crime

On Monday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the Justice Department plans to “develop policies to increase forfeitures.” And today he did just that by reversing a 2015 policy then-Attorney General Eric Holder issued that prohibited local law enforcement from circumventing more restrictive state civil forfeiture laws by partnering with the feds. When signaling this policy reversal, Sessions proclaimed “no criminal should be allowed to keep the proceeds of their crime.” The only problem is that we are not talking about criminals.

We are talking about Americans who have had their homes, cars, money, and other property taken through civil forfeiture, a practice that requires only mere suspicion that property is connected to a crime. That’s right — people can have their property taken by the government without a criminal charge being filed, much less a conviction secured. More often than not, the police who seize the property get to keep it or sell it off and keep the proceeds, which only incentivizes the corrupt practice.

And by now, most of America knows just how loose the standards are for law enforcement seizures by the case names, like State of Texas vs. One Gold Crucifix, where the ACLU would ultimately intervene. The country also knows that the “criminals” targeted by law enforcement are innocent property owners, like ACLU client Rhonda Cox. In 2013, she had her $6,000 used pickup truck seized and permanently forfeited because her 20-year-old son made repairs to it with stolen parts unbeknownst to her.

Civil asset forfeiture is unjust and un-American.

Now don’t get me wrong, we have known this day was coming. There is a list of failed War on Drugs policies that Attorney General Sessions is working to revive one day at a time. And there is the 2015 U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing where Sessions said that civil forfeiture only impacts those who have “done nothing in their lives but sell dope.” That’s patently untrue.

However, just because we anticipated this federal resuscitating of civil forfeiture does not mean that we should not be outraged. Civil forfeiture is unjust and un-American, according to 84 percent of the public. It’s also counter to bipartisan reform efforts in Congress, with Jeff Sessions has said he’s “very unhappy” with.

Attorney General Session’s action today is a big setback to the legislators in the more than 20 states that have reformed their civil forfeiture laws in recent years. Three states have eliminated civil forfeiture altogether, according to the Institute for Justice, while some now require a criminal conviction or subject civil forfeitures to a higher burden of proof. Essentially, Sessions has just provided law enforcement who do not like their state forfeiture laws with a loophole to police for profit. And when there are millions of dollars on the line, there is no incentive for law enforcement to abandon this practice on their own.

We can tell the Department of Justice don’t let cops use federal law to ignore stronger state asset forfeiture protections. But given today’s announcement by Attorney General Sessions, that call to action may fall on deaf ears. Now we must also demand that Congress pass civil asset forfeiture reforms and end policing for profit once and for all.

Donald J.Trump has a considerable amount of assets in Germany. It would behoove Germany to seize Trump's assets immediately. There isn't much he can do about it but cry. He doesn't reside in Germany, he isn't a German citizen or legalize immigrant currently in Germany or with a primary residence in Germany, and Germany has taken great losses due to Trump. Hence, I doubt he has a legal legal to stand on, and most of his actions including refusal to comply with climate change show he won't comply with the UN or international law, therefore his failure to recognize the UN requirements forfeits any legal rights he has under international law. In other words, any country Trump has assets in has every right to seize his assets. Including but not limited to numbered and unnumered offshore accounts, foreign stocks and bonds, intellectual and real property such as real estate. These can be easily justified as sanctions against the Trump administration's assets of a non-personal as well for their non-compliance as a governing body.

Eli Samuel Goldman

And Trump's personal assets can be seized in other countries without any justifications what so ever due to his numerous crimes affecting your countries economy, security forces, and the safety of your citizenry as well as many other crimes Trump has committed...such as his violations of recognized public trust-in-business practices, long before his presidency and concurrently.

What happens when a Drug Recognition trained officer pulls you over and says Hey I THINK you've been smoking medical cannabis and sets the stage for your life to be turned upside down . We have a Government powerful enough to take all that you own .

Eli Samuel Goldman

It's in violation of the rules of office to use a governmental office and powers to retaliate against a foreign nation over matters of a personal nature, like Trump's assets being seized in that country. Or the assets of his adminstration officials being seized in a foreign nation. So there isn't anything Trump or the others have the right or ability to do about it but threaten and complain, really.

Eli Samuel Goldman

Also, if Trump Assets in other counties are seized and they are unaccounted for or hidden assets, then even to prove it happened and attempt to get them back, he has to admit to having those unreported assets publically, which is the admission of a crime and the existence of those assets will be proof of a major crime by Donald J. Trump. Hence, there isn't much he can do ...he cannot even admit to having had his unreported assets taken or hes admitting to a felony, and thus can be finally prosecuted. ;) So I urge all other countries to just take/seize Trump's assets in your country.

I, Eli Samuel Goldman, on the other hand consider myself a friend to other nations and extend my virtual hand in friendship and unity with all member countries of the United Nations and their people, and am in agreement, committed to, and with fully complying with International laws and the UN. I give my warmest regards to all people of other nations.

Eli Samuel Goldman

Additionally I oppose Trump in his agressive bigotry and unfair treatment of foreign nations, and look forward a lifetime of friendly and mutually rewarding relations with the people of Nations other than the United States. I consider us all global citizens and feel as fellow human beings we must treat each other with respect and dignity. ....Please be aware, some of my harsher posts and statements are not my views, but rather an attempt to teach those who respond in bigotry and hate what it feels like to be on the receiving end of such bias, bigotry and hate.

Eli Samuel Goldman

I ask the leaders of other nations, well known media figures, stars, concerned citizens of different countries to demand Trump and his criminalistic-accomplices stop unlawfully and with malice of forethought stop persecuting, harrassing, defaming, and stalking Hillary Rodham Clinton. It seems the Trump Pseudo-adninistration is jealous of Clinton's successful record of beneficial relations with foreign nations and leaders and is persecuting her as a form of hate crime against a female leader. Trump and MANY of his cohorts have a long history of abusing women who assert themselves in a leadership role and hanging up on them. Clinton,it would seem, is just the latest victim in a long succession of Trump-related hate crimes against women. I may have major disagreement with some of Clinton's prior political policies, but the Trump-ordered-and-encouraged hate crimes against Hillary Clinton must end! I beg all men of character and all women of the world band together in protest, solidarity and a spirit of protecting those being abused and defend Hillary Clinton and demand the Trump Administration cease it's never ending attack on strong women.

Jeff Sessions is a piece of shit.

It seems Trump brought onboard another one of his Fox News misinformation team. Then he had the nerve after stealing from me, to use my words about accomplishing a lot and not getting credit. I swear, Trump is the consumate thief and criminal.
