If Donald Trump Implements His Proposed Policies, We’ll See Him in Court

This morning, Donald J. Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States, and the ACLU has a message for him.

President-elect Trump, as you assume the nation’s highest office, we urge you to reconsider and change course on certain campaign promises you have made. These include your plan to amass a deportation force to remove 11 million undocumented immigrants; ban the entry of Muslims into our country and aggressively surveil them; punish women for accessing abortion; reauthorize waterboarding and other forms of torture; and change our nation’s libel laws and restrict freedom of expression.

It's time to fight

These proposals are not simply un-American and wrong-headed, they are unlawful and unconstitutional. They violate the First, Fourth, Fifth, Eighth, and 14th Amendments. If you do not reverse course and instead endeavor to make these campaign promises a reality, you will have to contend with the full firepower of the ACLU at every step. Our staff of litigators and activists in every state, thousands of volunteers and millions of card-carrying members and supporters are ready to fight against any encroachment on our cherished freedoms and rights.

One thing is certain: We will be eternally vigilant every single day of your presidency. And when you leave the Oval Office, we will do the same with your successor as we have done throughout our nearly 100 years of existence. The Constitution and the rule of law are stronger than any one person, and we will see to that. We will never waver.

Saw you on Rachel Maddow Tonight. Been looking for someone to stand up for Americans as a whole, that perhaps may have some punch. Hopefully you do. All our freedoms are in imminent danger in this country, more than people realize. Apathy is not the way for any American who truly believes in the Constitution. Next I hope to find a way to help support keeping us safe as we fall in great disfavor with the rest of the world.

A whole bunch of people have been standing up for Americans for quite some time. Where have you been?

Let's get this straight. He was not elected by the people. He will most likely be appointed by the electoral college.

Anonymous

Who was he elected by then - animals, drones, or cadavers? Over sixty million Americans would disagree with you.

If you are OK with our tax dollars supporting "illegal" immigrants and letting Muslims from Middle East into our country...then you should be deported, too! It's time for us to take America back and take care of our own...like our veterans , elderly, children, etc. Embrace President Elect Trump and make the USA strong again...or go away

Shame on you anti American communists.....you all hate GOD AND FREEDOM....

Looking forward to it.

A very interesting read. Some of these things Trump didn't run on at all. Let's talk. Most likely, Trump will not deport 11 million illegals. However, he has every right legally. Think about it. They are here illegally. If you don't think he has the right to send them back it's like saying that a person who stole a candy bar shouldn't face trial because he already ate the candy. Pretty stupid, huh? What he has promised is that those who are good people and have something to offer this country, he will do his best to expedite their path to citizenship. And THAT my friends is a good thing.

As for banning the entries of Muslims into our country, Trump has every right to do so. Perhaps you didn't know about the the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952. It gives the president the legal right to ban anyone or any group of immigrants from the US for any reason. Every president since Carter has used this law and good ol' Obama knows about it for he has used it 6 times. ::shrugging::

He has no plans to "punish women for having an abortion." Sheesh let's talk about ridiculous. He said that one time off handed but never made it a campaign promise. Heck we the Republicans wont even let him do something that foolish.

Let's see, will he reauthorize waterboarding? I dunno. Should he? Yes indeed. It's a great tool. It does them no harm and gives us important information.

Where the heck did you come up with he will change our libel laws? I watched this campaign very closely and he didn't mention one thing about this. Methinks you are making this up.

I'm all for you watching him closely. I'm all for you nailing him to the wall if he does something illegal or something against our constitution, but for goodness sake stop being so paranoid. He loves America and he is a breath of fresh air after this current Bozo who did everything in his power to destroy the Constitution. Funny thing, I don't remember the ACLU fighting him much over his abuses of power. Where were you?

There's NO such thing as a ninth-month abortion!
