Macklemore: "If You Like Being Free Like Me, Get The ACLU Card Today."

Rap superstar Macklemore is urging his fans to get the card "that lets my gay friends marry the hell out of each other." That's the ACLU's legendary membership card. "If you like being free like me, get the ACLU card today," the award-winning rapper advises in a video he launched today.

"There is no other organization that I believe in more. The tireless work of the ACLU to preserve the freedoms of all people in our country inspires my music and my deepest connection to my human community," explained Macklemore.

Macklemore and his partner Ryan Lewis won an MTV award for "Best Video with a Message" for their song Same Love. The song became an anthem for R-74, the referendum which upheld Washington's law granting marriage rights to same-sex couples. The ACLU of Washington has long worked for equal treatment of lesbian and gay relationships and served on the referendum campaign's coordinating body. Macklemore spoke about his support for the cause in a video produced for the ACLU-WA's 2012 Bill of Rights Dinner.

Now Macklemore is asking people to become ACLU members. "I've got a lot of things to do during the day. So something like being beaten with a club, pepper-sprayed, and tased for expressing my political views would really slow me down. That's why I carry the ACLU card," he says in the 50-second video.

As part of his efforts to highlight the importance of civil liberties Macklemore is also participating in an ACLU-sponsored contest. Participants are encouraged to enter to win tickets plus backstage passes to see Macklemore perform live in Seattle on December 12th. Details here.

What a loser. This guy puts out consistent crap music and then urges people to align themselves with an organization that is killing the country. Please just go ahead and vote Sharpton into office in 2016 and then defend the results, as you do now for Oblahblah.

I like the add but it's not at all clear how to get the card! Could you update this article??

The ACLU is the largest threat to the liberty of the people that's ever existed. But you are accomplishing everything that you seek to destroy this country so...well done. May I live to see the day that brings the ruin of your organization.

The US Constitution says it all folks- this card is a moot point and is a complete waste of time. Of course we have the right to waste all the time we want. Last time I checked, being stupid wasn't against the law.

I have a pocket constitution and bill of rights that is free and I don't have to donate to an organization that doesn't defend all the rights given in the founding documents to know what they are

Generally I like you, but in your song about labeling people you call out right wing extremists as anti gay. Just for the record right wing extremist believe in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights where everyone has a right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. What that means as a right wing extremist is you can do whatever you want as long as it doesn't hurt someone else. You can have sex with who you want smoke what you want and rap what you want. I think you are guilty of stereotyping the right wing extremist.

He does not mention the APR of the card, nor the minimum payment... Oh, wait, this is not a credit card?? Y0u need this card to speak your mind??? Since when?? If some guy comes after you with pepper spray or a billy club, you hold up this card and he will magically cease and desist??? Why??? It seems to me that the idea that free speech is restricted to Card holders is rather bizarre. If you are that gullible, I have some email from Nigeria that you might be interested in.........
