Betsy DeVos Denies Trans Students Basic Rights

On March 27, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos appeared before the House Appropriations Committee to answer questions about the administration’s first year in office. While I had no shortage of questions for her, one of my top priorities was asking her about her department’s failure to protect the rights of transgender students.

During the Obama administration, the Department of Education issued guidance to public schools explaining that schools should allow students to use restrooms consistent with their gender identity in accordance with basic civil rights law under Title IX.

I heard from plenty of teachers and administrators throughout Wisconsin who were either already acting in accordance with the new rule, or gladly welcomed guidance on this important issue.

However, Secretary DeVos rescinded the Obama-era guidance in 2017, robbing transgender students of rights which should be afforded to every public school student.

In February of this year, Secretary DeVos continued to discriminate against transgender students by announcing that her department would not investigate any complaints filed by transgender students who had been banned from restrooms that match their gender identity.

When this happened, I couldn’t help but think of Ashton Whitaker, a young man from my home town of Kenosha, Wisconsin, who is currently a first year student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 2016, Ashton rightly challenged his school to allow him to use the restroom consistent with his gender identity. Courts affirmed that forcing this young man to use the wrong restroom constituted illegal discrimination on the basis of sex.

In 2018, we should not need a refresher on basic discrimination. Rescinding someone’s rights, which have been upheld in court, on the basis of their gender identity is wrong. Refusing to listen to complaints from a certain population of students is wrong.

Secretary DeVos has consistently shown her willful ignorance when failing to visit underperforming schools, as well as her mean-spirited, anti-LGBT views when denying rights to certain students. At some point, she should realize that as Secretary of Education, she is supposed to represent all students, not just a select few.

the correct verb is "are"

That being said, your statement is incorrect. Do some research. "Gender" is a purely cultural concept.

The ACLU and trans lobby refuse to listen to complaints of a certain group of students, specifically biological females. Those who do not wish to shower with Surgically Chemically Altered Males have their complaints ignored. A male exposing his penis to girls gets arrested for a sex offense, but if he *identifies* as a girl then no crime occurs. This is why I no longer donate to this organization.

Women fought and died for the right to have spaces free of men. It's time to stop conflating women's spaces and services with "sex discrimination." There are no pink brains and blue brains that sometimes get put in the wrong body, and all of gender ideology is based on regressive stereotypes. Empirical research is not on your side. Gender-inclusive policies result in increased sexual misconduct. In the UK, males are now allowed to self-ID and go into female changing rooms, and parents there are talking about their young girls being exposed to men/boys masturbating while at school. That is not progress, ACLU. That is sending dangerous messages to girls about their boundaries and autonomy. But even if you don't care much about girls/women, think of the long-term damage it does to trans-identified people when we validate their delusions about who they are, or encourage them to mutilate healthy body parts or take dangerous hormone blockers. Transgenderism is a cult and the pharmaceutical and cosmetic surgery industries are pulling the strings. Stop this madness.

You tell them Norabelle! I brought up the issue of "tossing off" in the ladies room, but the ACLU censored my comments.

Please show your data about increased crime in bathrooms used by transgendered people? Because most bathroom violence occurs against the trans individuals. The evidence does not support your fears.

ignorant, unqualified ass-hole...

Every student deserves the right to feel safe and comfortable in the bathroom. Biology is a real science. DeVos got it right and Obama was wrong to push that on millions of people who know their identity. Males and females need their safe places, if transgender people need a safe place then require that they get their own bathrooms. I can't believe this is still an issue.

The problem here is that supporters of this subject, demand that they are right and everyone else is a bitch. There are so many different people in our country and world that we all need to try to understand and not make everything a fight. Because supporters use the "fight" to color their support. most everyone today understands that it must suck having to go through what trans people must. But its not right to try and force your absolute beliefs on everyone who disagrees. its not right to call her a bitch and make up other lies about her. Why not try to communicate and allow others a chance to come around? Someone here said that we should do research to see if biology is wrong and there are more than 2 sexes especially in other cultures. So what, this is our culture and we don't have to buy that. There are other cultures who also kill trans people, should we go that route? There are Asian cultures that promote man boy relationships, are we headed there as well? Some Asian cultures hand over daughters to a pimp so he will make monthly payments to them and she lives a life of slavery. Is that ok? Stop using that argument, its not where almost every American is in their beliefs. I am not trying to be mean to trans people, I am saying calm the f*&%k down and allow conversation to happen and try to understand others who have different views. Why not go for a win win vs a "screw you, take that approach"?
