President Trump, Please Don’t Roll Back Progress on Trans Rights. My Son’s Counting on You.

In the fourth piece in the series, “Waking Up in Trump’s America,”  Deirdre Grimm explains the anxieties of being the parent of a transgender teenager as anti-trans animus and legislation revs up nationally after the election of Donald Trump.

Across the country, states are gearing up to push bills that are explicitly aimed at rejecting the humanity of transgender people. Of course, discrimination against trans people is nothing new. I’ve watched it happen to my own son, Gavin Grimm, ever since his school board singled him out for discrimination and refused to let him use the boy’s restroom.

But the 2016 election results threaten to worsen the situation. When public officials use their power to bully and demonize people, everyone notices. And they follow that example. That’s why it’s so incredibly important for President Donald Trump to set a good example for the rest of this country and makes an effort to respect the rights and humanity of all people, regardless of their race, class, gender, or sexual orientation.

Unfortunately, it feels like we’re instead waking up to a different vision for America. In explaining why he felt emboldened to introduce another discriminatory, anti-transgender bathroom bill, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick explained that, “Starting in 2017, we will have a friend in the White House.”

My son and the millions of other transgender people in this country deserve a friend in the White House, too. It broke my heart to see my own child targeted by the institutions meant to protect and help him, and it sickens me to think that many now feel even more emboldened to target transgender people for discrimination.

When Gavin first came out to me as transgender, I didn’t fully understand what that meant. But I knew I was going to be there for my child no matter what. When I saw the staggeringly high rate of suicide among transgender people, I began to fully understand just how important it was to support Gavin in who he is. Everyone deserves to live their life as their most authentic self.

Policies that affirm the rights of transgender people to be treated like everyone else can literally save lives. I cannot express how happy we were when the Obama administration issued guidance reiterating the rights of transgender people to use the bathrooms consistent with their gender identity. If the incoming administration follows through on promises to reverse those policies, they will do untold damage to trans people across the country.

My child deserves to be treated with the same dignity and respect as any other kid.

As a parent, the only thing I’ve ever wanted for my children is for them to live healthy, happy lives. And as a parent of a transgender child, I can’t help but feel nervous as we look to see where this country goes next. My child deserves to be treated with the same dignity and respect as any other kid.

It’s been so rewarding to watch my son grow into such a self-assured, confident young man even while being put under scrutiny that is hard to fathom at times.

Gavin’s a fighter, and he has a strong sense of what is right. So he stood up to his school board and demanded that he be respected as a boy at school. This fight will make its way to the Supreme Court in March.

I’m so incredibly proud of my son for fighting on behalf of transgender kids all across the country. Those kids deserve to live in a country where their president stands up for their rights and accepts them for who they are.

Nobody knows for sure what these next four years will bring. And to be certain, discrimination against transgender people was happening long before Donald Trump even thought about running for president. But we’ve made strides.

The love and support that my son has received during his fight for equal rights have given me hope for the future. The way in which people around the country rallied around opposition to North Carolina’s discriminatory anti-trans law, H.B. 2, has helped awaken people to the challenges that trans people face in trying to live their lives.

But progress can be fragile. Like many people, I’m anxious about what the future holds. If the president turns a blind eye towards the discrimination that transgender people face simply for trying to live their lives, it can literally mean the difference between life and death for many people. Only President Trump can answer for how he’ll grapple with that responsibility.

One thing’s for sure: He can’t have friends like Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick.

Transexuals are mutilated gays and lesbians. I don’t care what others say but mutilating a man or woman to make them fake members of opposite sex is gay/lesbian. And gay/lesbian groups are apologists for Transexuals which is why the word T is there. They must abolish this surgical mutilation.

Finally, sex change maimings which is mutilating some1 to make them fake members of opposite sex is comparable to trying to make a man a fake animal because he thinks he is an animal trapped in a human body. Most feminists are not speaking against this. 1 would hope that feminists would oppose the mutilation that happened to Chastity Sun Bono as feminists have spoken against Female Genital Mutilation which happens in some nations. Transexuals are mutilations which no Dr. should take part in, yet most feminists are not condemning this female genital and breast mutilation as what happened to Chastity S. Bono where her healthy breasts were mutilated, dangerous hormone shots and her genitals mutilated.

Your comment shouldn't be dignified with any responses, as ignorant of the facts as you are and the comment ideologically perverted as it is, so while I shall gloss over the obvious misuse of the loaded word "mutilation," I'd certainly be curious how someone with your limited worldview redefines gay and lesbian transgender people. Since you argue, apparently, that a heterosexual trans man is a lesbian and a heterosexual trans woman is a gay man, it certainly makes one wonder what you consider a gay trans man or a trans lesbian, since they are attracted to what you would wrongly regard as their same sex.

You've made it quite clear that you don't understand the concept of, "consent" - but from the hateful rhetoric I can't say I'm surprised. Furthermore, you have made it equally clear that your knowledge does not include anything about sex dimorphic animal development, including humans, nor the difference between species and sex dimorphism. In short, you are typing at some length regarding topics about which you know nothing but your own narrow life experience. I implore you to reach out, learn about the topics at hand and open your mind to the idea that nature is far more creative than you realize.

You are wrong.
Gender identity is not the same as sexual orientation.
Like practically everything else in life, masculinity/femininity is a spectrum, not something that's black and white
Just because you don't (want?) to understand doesn't mean something is wrong.

Do not compare FGM, which is non-consensual, with consensual, fully-informed, medical & surgical procedures.

Just curious what you would call a male to female transsexual who is attracted to females? Would they be lesbian or heterosexual to you?

I want to go into women’s bathrooms if there are pretty women in there & if a pretty woman wants to use men’s bathrooms, then that is fine with me. I want a pretty woman to go into men’s bathrooms but I wouldn’t want uglies like Ellen Lee DeGeneres and Rosie T. O’Donnell shitting in any bathroom as they’re ugly so Ellen & Rosie can shit in diapers. Ellen Lee DeGeneres & Rosie T. O’Donnell both probably like to have farting & shitting contests in bathrooms, so Ellen & Rosie both want to do battleshits contest in men’s bathrooms since women’s toilets got dirtied by them.

with breast implants, if they disappeared, then unless it's reconstruct surgery for a woman who has had disease, I wouldn't lose sleep over it & don't care 1 way or the other. Most men want a woman with real boobs, than operated boobs. I don't care 1 way or the other about tattoos, body piercings & what you describe. If they disappear, then so be it. Incidentally, I'm neutral on abortion such as if it can be predicted an unborn baby will be deformed, then if mom wants to abort, then it should be her right. But I know the view of pro-lifers & if they want to go through legislative process to make abortion illegal, then so be it. I support birth control but am against sterilization surgeries. I support fertility treatments and I support In Vitro Fertilization.

I am not a Christian but there are topics where I agree with Christian groups. I agree with Christians on the dangers of gay/lesbian agenda and there are many non-Christians and even some atheists who agree with Evangelical Christians. With homosexuality, if knowing and willing adults want to do gay/lesbian conduct, then its their life. Homosexual/lesbian conduct is bad for health as smoking is and needs to be marginalized like smoking is. They must abolish sex change maimings. I’m against sex changes for the same reason as I oppose trying to make a White person Black or viceversa because they think they were born of another race. Sex changes are a sad waste of science. Sex changes happen because science knows how. If they knew how to change skin color, Drs. would be making the same justifications for changing color of people who think they are of other race as they now do for sex changes. it doesn’t take an expert to know that hormone shots + the maiming surgery damages the body. Transexuals have antisocial personalities.

I strongly support sterilization simply because of cancers like you =)
