With Three Tweets President Trump Cruelly Threatens Trans Service Members With Rank Discrimination

In a series of tweets this morning, President Donald Trump unexpectedly announced a cruel and dangerous reversal in policy on transgender individuals serving in the military. Claiming that “[o]ur military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory,” Trump falsely suggested that transgender individuals were too costly and disruptive to continue serving.

The announcement came as a surprise to everyone, including, it seems, the Pentagon.

Stop Trump’s Ban on Transgender Military Service

In fact, just a year ago, the Department of Defense ended the ban on open transgender service, explaining:

“This policy was crafted through a comprehensive and inclusive process that included the leadership of the Armed Services, medical and personnel experts across the Department, transgender Service members, outside medical experts, advocacy groups, and the RAND Corporation.”

Apparently that extensive work over many years and across many areas of expertise was reversed in a matter of minutes — over Twitter.

Indeed, contrary to Trump’s suggestion on Twitter, retired Adm. Mike Mullen, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, testified in Congress just last week that inclusion of transgender individuals in the military promoted readiness and caused no disruption or cost. He explained that “[t]he military conducted a thorough research process on this issue and concluded that inclusive policy for transgender troops promotes readiness” and urged Congress “to respect the military’s judgment and not to breach the faith of service members who defend our freedoms.”

Congress ultimately rejected a proposal to ban health coverage for transgender servicemembers and dependents. As Mullen noted, “Thousands of transgender Americans are currently serving in uniform and there is no reason to single out these brave men and women and deny them the medical care that they require.”

This is not about cost. This is not about readiness or a strong military. Today’s announcement is about targeting, demonizing, and endangering a group of people who are risking their lives every day for our country.

To the thousands of trans people currently serving in the military and to the thousands more who love and support them, we will not stop fighting. If the military reverses its existing policies protecting trans service members in response to the president’s tweets, the ACLU is ready to act.

To add on to what was said previously. When you join the military you voluntarily give up many Constitutional rights. You even are judged by a different set of laws (much more strict) called the Uniformed Code of Miltary Justice (UCMJ). Every service member knows this. The military is not fair, it's not a social experiment, it's a fearsome extension of our war making capabilities. If this shocks you, or angers you then have a nice life, the military is not for you.

It's just another way to screw the tax payers; get a free sex change by joining the army. Who forced Obama to pull this off?

Trumps twitter comment is a violation of twitters terms of service--it's harrassment. The tweet needs reported on a MASSIVE LEVEL. #suspendtrumpstwitter

Thank God our President communicates directly with us. Free speech is for all our citizens, including the Commander-in-Chief. I have a strong feeling the ACLU wound agree.

I am currently an active duty Marine and I am grateful to God and family for the opportunity to serve this great country. With regards to the transgender policy, I never even knew that it was even an issue until the Obama administration lifted the policy. I agree that anyone should be able to serve as long as they meet the standard. I also think that it is hard enough to get men and women with the mental aptitude to survive the horrors of war/combat. Now, to through the psychological aspect of a young person going through mental anguish on what sex he or she is just is not needed within the ranks. At the end of the day, we are a WARFIGHTING organization not SOCIAL organization. We are in the business of saving lives. Introducing this additional population into the recruiting pool will not make us stronger as a Marine Corps by no sense of the word. I am infantry and I can tell you that we are just not ready for that additional variable. No unit is. You would be trying to convince me that when I get this young man that enlist solely for the process to be paid for by the good American people's money is fraud, waste and abuse. I love everyone but when it comes to being the world's most lethal Marine Corps this will not improve that. It may only hinder it due to the procedures and medication that a potential recruit has to be subjected to. So tell a commander that is preparing for war that he is getting a Marine that oh by the way, will never be useful on the battlefield because he is going to be spending a majority of his enlistment going through the gender transition. So does this even make any logic from a readiness perspective. Not really. Now to those serving that have already gone through the process, so be it. They should not be forced to leave because who will even know they have gone through the change.
