Trans Students Deserve Better, President Trump

Late in the day on Friday, President Donald Trump’s Justice Department – now headed by Jeff Sessions – announced that it would drop a challenge to a nationwide injunction against guidance issued last year by the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice on the rights of transgender students under Title IX, a federal civil rights law that prohibits sex discrimination in education. Many now fear that the administration may be preparing to revoke the guidance entirely and change its stance on what those critical federal protections mean for trans students.

This latest action sends a terrible message to some of the most vulnerable young people in the country that the Trump administration does not care about protecting them from discrimination. It was only several weeks ago that the White House proudly announced that “President Trump continues to be respectful and supportive of LGBTQ rights, just as he was throughout the election.” But actions speak far louder than words, and the early signs from Trump’s Justice Department are not good.

It is important for trans students across the country and their parents to know this: The law is on your side, and we at the ACLU will fight to make sure you are protected.

The Trump administration does not have the authority to undo legal protections for trans students. Trans students are protected by the U.S. Constitution and Title IX. School districts across the country must still comply with the law. Schools that have done the right thing by treating trans students with dignity and respect should continue to do so. Schools that discriminate against trans students will continue to face liability in court. Barring trans students from single-sex spaces like restrooms and locker rooms that are consistent with the gender the student lives every day, is a violation of that student’s constitutional and civil rights.

The ACLU is deeply committed to the fight for trans equality, and we will continue our work to safeguard the dignity and rights of trans students.

Next month, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in Gavin Grimm’s transgender rights case. Gavin is a 17-year-old boy whose Virginia high school has forced him to use separate restroom facilities from all other students because he is transgender. The ACLU sued the school district on Gavin’s behalf, and a lower federal court held that the school board’s actions were unlawful sex discrimination. The school board continued to fight against Gavin’s right to use the restroom all the way to the Supreme Court.

If the Trump administration will not step up to defend trans students, the ACLU will. Every student deserves the right to a quality education that is free of discrimination. To President Trump and Attorney General Sessions, we say this: Trans students deserve better.

There is something wrong with a man thinking he is a woman or a woman thinking she is a man. It is mutilation with dangerous hormones. Most transexuals were sexually abused in childhood which messed up their minds and transexuals sexually abuse children. Transexuals are mutilated gays and lesbians. I don’t care what others say but mutilating a man or woman to make them fake members of opposite sex is gay/lesbian. And gay/lesbian groups are apologists for Transexuals which is why the word T is there. They must abolish this surgical mutilation.

All transexuals are homosexual/lesbian as the act of mutilating to become false opposite sex is itself an act of homosexuality/lesbianism-sad maiming and make this illegal. Finally, sex change maimings which is mutilating some1 to make them fake members of opposite sex is comparable to trying to make a man a fake animal because he thinks he is an animal trapped in a human body. Most feminists are not speaking against this. 1 would hope that feminists would oppose the mutilation that happened to Chastity Sun Bono as feminists have spoken against Female Genital Mutilation which happens in some nations. Transexuals are mutilations which no Dr. should take part in, yet most feminists are not condemning this female genital and breast mutilation as what happened to Chastity S. Bono where her healthy breasts were mutilated, dangerous hormone shots and her genitals mutilated.

Your life must be really sad if you believe all this.

I think your mind is messed up. I am a feminist and I wholly support all LGBTQ+ rights. You and your prejudice are abhorrent.

Ok honestly.. Who do you think you are and what kind of education do you have, or lack thereof? I have trans gender friends and gay friends. They're honestly some of the nicest people I've ever met and none of them were abused as children?? Plus if this is what makes them happy then who am I to stop them. How will their own personal choice ever hurt you? Oh right it won't.. Please try being a more open minded person

I genuinely feel that you need to get help and you should think about seeing a Dr or therapist.

Seriously Why the fuck are you even here? get some education on a subject you obviously know jack shit about.

This might be an interesting argument if you had facts & actual knowledge of what you were talking about

Ignorance is a bliss but in your case is a curse.
Your argument has no basis. Has no base, therefore lacks facts. People need to educate what means to be transgender, and respect them even if they don't agree.
Schools should start (or continue) educating children about what means to be LGTBQ, like that as they are growing up there will be less discrimination and more diversity/acceptance.

Welcome, time traveler from 1952! Do you know that here in the future, people of all colour, sexual orientation, gender identity are actually considered... wait for it, human beings with equal protection under the law?!! What? You want to get into your time machine and go home? Please do. Best you go back to the past where you belong. Keep turning that dial back to the Middle Ages where I hope your fear of science will be justly rewarded by small pox. Cheerio bye bye!

Evan Elise

You are incredibly ignorant. I suggest you educate yourself about this topic -- and also humanize this topic for yourself by actually speaking to non-cis gender people, as well as non-straight people...if you are able to do so with the respect you have NOT shown in your comments.
