Trans Students Deserve Better, President Trump

Late in the day on Friday, President Donald Trump’s Justice Department – now headed by Jeff Sessions – announced that it would drop a challenge to a nationwide injunction against guidance issued last year by the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice on the rights of transgender students under Title IX, a federal civil rights law that prohibits sex discrimination in education. Many now fear that the administration may be preparing to revoke the guidance entirely and change its stance on what those critical federal protections mean for trans students.

This latest action sends a terrible message to some of the most vulnerable young people in the country that the Trump administration does not care about protecting them from discrimination. It was only several weeks ago that the White House proudly announced that “President Trump continues to be respectful and supportive of LGBTQ rights, just as he was throughout the election.” But actions speak far louder than words, and the early signs from Trump’s Justice Department are not good.

It is important for trans students across the country and their parents to know this: The law is on your side, and we at the ACLU will fight to make sure you are protected.

The Trump administration does not have the authority to undo legal protections for trans students. Trans students are protected by the U.S. Constitution and Title IX. School districts across the country must still comply with the law. Schools that have done the right thing by treating trans students with dignity and respect should continue to do so. Schools that discriminate against trans students will continue to face liability in court. Barring trans students from single-sex spaces like restrooms and locker rooms that are consistent with the gender the student lives every day, is a violation of that student’s constitutional and civil rights.

The ACLU is deeply committed to the fight for trans equality, and we will continue our work to safeguard the dignity and rights of trans students.

Next month, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in Gavin Grimm’s transgender rights case. Gavin is a 17-year-old boy whose Virginia high school has forced him to use separate restroom facilities from all other students because he is transgender. The ACLU sued the school district on Gavin’s behalf, and a lower federal court held that the school board’s actions were unlawful sex discrimination. The school board continued to fight against Gavin’s right to use the restroom all the way to the Supreme Court.

If the Trump administration will not step up to defend trans students, the ACLU will. Every student deserves the right to a quality education that is free of discrimination. To President Trump and Attorney General Sessions, we say this: Trans students deserve better.

you need to fact check

To have such awesome grammar, you really are ignorant on the subject. If you did some research based on scientific facts, you would find this out. Your beliefs hurt this community! Do you think someone would opt for a gender transformation if they had not tried everything else before? Why does not giving them the option of surgery help when this is something that affects their emotional health on every day of their lives? And, unless you are transgender, you really have no business making decisions for them regarding their treatment options.

Have fun talking out your arse mate. I'm a trans woman and my partner is a woman. So yeah, I'm gay, just not in the way that you're thinking. Actually most trans women I know actually have girlfriends, but sure, have fun talking utter shite.

Also your talk of "mutilation" is hilarious. Most trans people I know in the US can't afford the $15,000+ required for surgery and just deal with having what they have due to lack of having any option.

You're fucking pathetic.

Dennis Hartnett

No wonder you didn't leave your name - I'd be scared too, if I believed the garbage you just wrote. It's just sad. Especially in 2017.

You are not only woefully misinformed about individuals diagnosed with gender dysphoria, but appear to be extremely ignorant as well. You are trying to combine like 5 totally UNRELATED issues (genital mutilation, feminism, child abuse - I mean, get a grip already!?) into some rambling rant about trans issues. 1) The individuals involved in this and other transgender related cases are NOT transSEXUALS - there is a MAJOR difference between the two. Do your homework before spouting a bunch of nonsense online to confuse people actually trying to do good in the world. 2) Sit down and shut up. You have no dog in this fight. No one cares about your religious thoughts on gender roles - save it for church and let people live their lives. Ugh.

I'm a nonreligious person who sees something wrong with homosexual & lesbian conduct & I think that they must make it a crime to do sex changes. Even if orientation doesn’t change, it’s best for gays/lesbians to be celibate just as it’s best for a person with tobacco orientation not to smoke. If homosexuality is inborn as some scientists believe, then it would be a birth defect.

People distrust mainstream psychologists or mental health ‘professionals’ on homosexuality because-

1. They arrogantly say they’re mental health professionals as though what they say is infallible.

2. They have pro-homosexual biases and are dishonest. Psychology since 1973 in the USA usually has a pro-homosexual bias and not trustworthy. If a psychologist says truth which offends homosexual groups, then it gets condemned by homosexual groups.

If you are going to condemn therapy for homosexuals and lesbians who want to change to heterosexuality then you may as well condemn therapy for drug/drinking problems because such therapy often fails. Is it possible for a homosexual or lesbian to change sexual behavior and sexual orientation to heterosexuality? There are gays and lesbians who sincerely believe they changed to heterosexuality and without contrary proof only they know. Saying 1 does not know and that they will not conclude until they are convinced is Okay. The right thing to do is to hope they are right in their belief and that they did change to heterosexuality.

However, It is arrogant for psychologists or mental health ‘professionals’ to think they know and condemn by saying they did not change to heterosexuality. It would be rude for a psychologist to condemn an alcoholic who thinks he or she sincerely recovered. Repair therapy for gays and lesbians who want to be straight must be available just as repair therapy must be available for a drug junky who wants to become clean.

Can sexual orientation for some gays and lesbians change? We know that sexual behavior can. In 2001 Dr. Spitzer said that change was possible for highly motivated individuals and that happened after long journey and he got condemned by gay/lesbian groups. In 2007, he said that while gays and lesbians should not be forced into therapy, he believed it was the hubris of psychologists to deny this for those who want it.

In 2012, Dr. RL Spitzer retracted, apologized to gay/lesbian groups, saying therapy doesn’t work and condemned it. What I must wonder is did Dr. Spitzer in 2012 say what he believed, or did he say it to pacify gay/lesbian groups ? People have a right to doubt Dr. Spitzer’s sincerity.

Repair therapy for gays and lesbians who want to be straight must be available just as repair therapy available for a drug junky who wants to become clean. Yes, proof burden is on repair therapists, but if you aren’t going to have repair therapy for homsexuality/lesbianism, then you may as well not have repair therapy for drug junkyism or drunkardism.

I'm transgender and took personal offense to this. get an education.
And saying "Transexual" Is incorrect. if you don't care don't waste your time being transphobic.

Birth control pills, drugs to treat hormonal balances such as in womenopausal women do not involve maiming healthy body parts to make some1 a fake & those are fine as long as there's no high risks. They have & do stop selling birth control pills which are found to be dangerous to health.

I support abolishing vasectomies, tubal ligations and breast implants, I support birth control but am against sterilizations. I oppose breast implants because they are fake (excludes reconstruct surgeries for women who have had breast disease). If a woman has naturally nice big boobs then that is good. There is nothing wrong with a woman having small boobs. Most men want a woman with natural boobs-small, medium or big vs. a woman with fake boobs.

If a person thinks they're a dog, then should they shit outside ? I don't care if a pretty woman wants to go into men's bathrooms but I wouldn't want uglies like Ellen Lee DeGeneres and Rosie T. O'Donnell shitting in any bathroom as they're ugly so Ellen & Rosie can shit in diapers. Ellen Lee DeGeneres & Rosie T. O'Donnell both probably like to have farting & shitting contests in bathrooms, so Ellen & Rose both want to do battleshits contest in men's bathrooms since women's toilets got dirtied by them.

Truth about homosexuality's dangers don't change and truth must be told though information war is lost. Homosexual/lesbian conduct is bad for health like tobacco & needs to be treated like tobacco use by adults. If willing & knowing adults want to use tobacco or do gay/lesbian conduct, then that's their life, but it must be treated as harmful like tobacco is. I know what APA, mainstream psychologists & psychiatrists say about gay/lesbian conduct, but they are ideologues. I think that they must make it a crime to do sex changes.
