Project Liberty, the New York Civil Liberties Union’s (NYCLU) very own TV show, makes its broadcast debut this week in New York City on a public access channel. While we don’t expect to win Emmy awards, Project Liberty provides New Yorkers a sleek and compelling way to stay informed about our work.
The premier episode blends the voices of New Yorkers with NYCLU staff to explore civil rights and civil liberties issues that affect everyone. It examines a new anti-bullying law to protect New York’s public school students, the need to fix the nation’s broken immigration system, and concerns about the NYPD’s unconstitutional and racially biased stop-and-frisk practices.
The program also outlines some of the NYCLU’s legislative priorities for New York State this year, including legislation to allow gay and lesbian couples the freedom to marry, the Reproductive Health Act to update and strengthen the state’s abortion laws, and nonpartisan redistricting to counter the state’s long tradition of politicized gerrymandering.
All that and no commercials! The show debuts Tuesday, April 12 at 9 p.m. on channel 34, Manhattan Neighborhood Network. It will air again on Tuesday, April 19 at 8:30 p.m. on channel 67. A third broadcast is scheduled for Wednesday, April 27 at 2 p.m. on channel 34.
A new show will be produced quarterly. Eventually, it will air on public access channels throughout New York City.
