Tonight, when the Phoenix Suns face off against the San Antonio Spurs in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals, the Suns will wear their “Los Suns” jerseys in support of Arizona’s Latino community, and in protest of Arizona’s new racial profiling law .
Suns player Steve Nash told Bright Side of the Sun : “I think the law is very misguided. I think it is unfortunately to the detriment of our society and our civil liberties and I think it is very important for us to stand up for things we believe in.”
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is on board, and the team even tried to get their “Los Spurs” jerseys, though it was too late to do so. When asked for approval to wear the jerseys, the NBA “was all for it,” said Suns general manager Steve Kerr. Furthermore, NBA Players Association executive director Billy Hunter issued a press release, denouncing the law.
The ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, the ACLU of Arizona, the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund and the National Immigration Law Center have teamed up to challenge to this extreme new law . We’ll be announcing details soon.
