North Carolina's Badge of Dishonor

Yesterday, Governor Pat McCrory broke his word and ignored his constituents when he signed the #motorcyclevagina bill, which includes sweeping anti-abortion provisions that could force clinics across the state to close.

McCrory's signing follows one in Texas, where earlier this month Governor Rick Perry passed a similar bill that could force dozens of clinics to close across the state. (This is the bill that Wendy Davis filibustered for an impressive nearly-12 hours in her awesome pink sneakers, and that thousands of Texans showed up to protest).

And earlier this year, legislators in Arkansas, North Dakota, Kansas, Wisconsin, Alabama, and even more states passed bills that put legislators in doctors' offices. As we've said before, being part of this list is not a badge of honor. Legislators across the country are interfering with these deeply private decisions.

North Carolina's newest restriction on abortion access turns back the clock on women's health care. It may be 2013, but instead of expanding access to health care, enabling doctors to take better care of their patients, and allowing women to make their own decisions, this new law aims to prevent our medical professionals from providing the care we need, when we need it. Medical experts, include the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, oppose this kind of blatant interference with personal private health care decisions and strongly oppose the bill.

Politicians must think we are stupid by trying to push these bills out while claiming, at the same time, they support women's health. But we won't be fooled. Unfortunately this trend will continue if we do not take action. Let's keep the drumbeat going, let's #StandWithWomen, and let's show these politicians that we mean business.

this article doesn't explain anything and belies the intelligence that I hope the author actually possesses. I came here looking for information, not hash tags.

what the hell, leave motorcycles out of it.. you should of had a vacuums with a hose attached and a vagina make more sense.. What were you thinking

When a woman rides a powerful motorcycle (either driving or as a passenger), it has a tendency to stimulate the vagina (as a result of the engine's vibrations, which are carried up through the frame to the saddle). While I wouldn't have expected to find an article discussing this on the ACLU website, the title certainly had me hoping.

My post was comment was blocked by some automated filter...
ACLU is allowed to say "vagina" but I'm not? So much for protecting my civil liberties...

ACLU won't let me use the medical term for a woman's reproductive organs in my comment (thanks to an automated filter).
Thanks for defending my civil liberties...

C'mon you guys..all of the readers that are complaining about how the article doesnt describe exactly what the bill is about..how about you do what I did when it caught my interest and then left me wanting to know more details...click on the hyperlink to the bill and actually READ it!! How lazy have you all become that you cant put a little effort into it. Even if the article had explained in more depth what it was about I still would have wanted to read the bill and see for myself rather than relying on a reporter to give an unbiased view of it. How hard was it? Well, it took me all of 5 mins to click on the hyperlink and then read the durn bill and understand what it was about...

What IS it with all you people who want everyone else to look up stuff FOR you? My mom always made me run to the dictionary or look up information myself b/c she thought I "wouldn't learn the work if I did it for you."
Been gone since 2007 but I can still hear that voice as if she were standing beside - and maybe she is, but never mind.

For the benefit of people who AREN'T going to look it up I've included it here.

They hid one bill inside another, like Greeks hiding in the Trojan horse, which is an apt image since there's more than one type of Trojan.
It's a sneaky, underhanded DESPIcable thing to do.

There's nothing dishonorable about making murder illegal.
