Obama Can Stop the Trump Administration From Targeting and Discriminating Against Muslim and Arab Immigrants

This Monday, December 12, the ACLU will be joining Color of Change, 18 Million Rising, MomsRising.org, MoveOn, DRUM — Desis Rising Up and Moving, and others to deliver over 280,000 petition signatures calling on President Obama to repeal the special registration system targeting Muslim and Arab immigrants before Donald Trump takes office.

Act now to end discriminatory registration

The President-elect has promised on multiple occasions to target Muslim immigrants for “extreme vetting” — a truly terrifying prospect. In 2017, he could make this threat a reality by activating the dormant National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS) program with the flip of a switch — unless President Obama takes action now.

The NSEERS “special” registration system was put in place by President George W. Bush in the aftermath of 9/11. President Obama discontinued NSEERS in 2011 but left the regulatory framework on the books, ready to be reactivated at any time. If the Obama administration rescinds the NSEERS regulation now, that will terminate the registration program, leaving nothing for the next administration to reactivate.

This program is not only discriminatory and dangerous — it’s completely ineffective as a security measure. In its nearly 10 years of operation, NSEERS did not produce a single terrorism conviction. Even the inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security — the department’s watchdog — said the program was unreliable and a waste of taxpayers’ money.

The ACLU is taking action now to get rid of the authoritarian tools the Trump administration can use to target immigrants from Muslim-majority countries. Join us this Monday, December 12, at 1:45 p.m. at Lafayette Square in front of the White House for a rally. We’ll deliver over 280,000 petition signatures to take a stand against discrimination and hate and demonstrate that we won’t stand idly by as the incoming administration tries to dismantle our free and open society. Sign the petition here.

Now that we have the benefit of hindsight, it appears that those of us who issued alerts and warnings were
NOT wrong about POTUS 45.

No, they did that all BEFOREhand, when 19 were slipped through who stayed for months planning how to "kill the Americans in their homeland," which they did on September 11, 2001. Only ONE was turned away and he's at Guantanamo right now, living while Eric and thousands of others are dead, living while feeling so sorry for himself he'd make Scarlett O'Hara look like Mother Teresa. Feeling no remorse while Eric and thousands of others are dead.
But Donald Trump ISN'T doing this because he gives a shit about Eric and thousands of others or even our "safety."
HE'S DOING IT BECAUSE HE LOST MONEY ON SEPTEMBER 11 AND CARES MORE ABOUT THAT GODDAM SHIT THAN HE EVER WILL ANYTHING ELSE.
He said it in his campaign speeches, so I'm not telling anything that people don't know, he said Bush lost him money. I hope he's sentenced in the afterlife to be forced to look at himself and never be able to look away even when he wants to. Don't think it wouldn't be a punishment. He hates himself. I'd bet money I don't have that he hates himself because self-hatred is on the flipside of Napoleon Complex. He puts his name on everything and acts like Napoleon in other ways but he only places his last name on things, not the first.

In the hours after September 11th, FBI agents in Minneapolis shared a macabre joke. For weeks prior, they had tried to interest FBI headquarters in Washington in Zacarias Moussaoui, now known as the 20th hijacker. They had begged FBI Headquarters to give them permission to seek a search warrant of Moussaoui's computer. They were denied. In their frustration, they joked that headquarters back in Washington must be infiltrated by agents of Osama Bin Laden. Why else would their work have been thwarted? This disturbing story is told in a 13-page, single-spaced letter written to FBI Director Robert Mueller by Colleen Rowley. The letter, portions of which TIME magazine has obtained, chronicle the efforts of Rowley, the Minneapolis Chief Division Counsel, to get the FBI interested in Moussaoui. Moussaoui was arrested in August on a visa violation after the Minnesota flight school at which the French national was taking lessons notified the FBI about his suspicious behavior. Much of the letter recounts Rowley's efforts to convince FBI headquarters to pursue a search warrant of Moussaoui's computer. The FBI maintained that probable cause did not exist and that a warrant would not be approved by the U.S. Attorney. Rowley argues forcefully that a warrant was indeed appropriate, citing French intelligence reports given to the bureau that linked Moussaoui with radical Islamic causes. The letter portrays the FBI as a place where agents are thwarted from doing their job by a "climate of fear." She writes: "Numerous high-ranking FBI officials who have made decisions or have taken actions which, in hindsight, turned out to be mistaken or just turned out badly (i.e. Ruby Ridge, Waco, etc.) have seen their careers plummet and end. This has in turn resulted in a climate of fear which has chilled aggressive FBI law enforcement action/decisions. In a large hierarchical bureaucracy such as the FBI, with the requirement for numerous supervisors' approvals/oversight, the premium on career enhancement, and interjecting a chilling factor brought on by recent extreme public congressional criticism/oversight, and I think you will see at least the makings of the most likely explanation." content.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,249500,00.html

And just how are we supposed to stop a TRULY dangerous person from coming in? Do tell. You owe it to 3,000 families to explain it with more than a flippant article about signing to get rid of it without explaining anything further. Like how a truly dangerous person could be stopped from coming in and putting more unsuspecting families through the continued fresh hell that we've lived ever since it happened?
I think we deserve an explanation of what's in place to stop it from happening again, since you people seem dedicated to getting rid of ALL security measures to prevent someone else from having to endure the pain of losing a loved one to homicide.

Like he couldn't start another one if he wants to? He's already said he's going to have attorneys rewrite the constitution for him, the way Bush already DID, which ruined the capital cases of defendants at Gitmo giving our dead loved ones no justice in that area. As long as the people who did it are breathing while Eric and 1000's more are dead it's not justice. Death isn't justice either but neither is life for them and they would have gotten death if Bush hadn't ruined the possibility.
You try to live with the aftermath of knowing someone who died on September 11 while you watched and then watched as it tore apart your teenage daughter. See how understanding of the actual murderers you'd be. I feel no remorse for them, and that's just how they've ALways felt about what they did. They felt no remorse in the killing zone and have none now. It all gets a little hard to take at times, especially around the holidays when you see everyone else taking their families for granted with impunity and would probably give your writing arm to have some more time with your loved one, only to recall that the opportunity has passed.

Security had to be taken seriously that the Obama administration has failed to do. Vetting is necessary.
