Better Than a Tinfoil Hat

By Catherine Crump, Staff Attorney, ACLU Speech, Privacy and Technology Project at 4:06pm

Wired’s ThreatLevel blog published a list of “9 Reasons Wired Readers Should Wear Tinfoil Hats.” Well, that’s one option. But if you’re concerned about Big Brother tracking Americans’ movements or rifling through our laptops, why not support the ACLU instead?

We’re working hard to ensure that as technology advances, our civil liberties aren’t left behind.

Don’t think police officers should be attaching GPS devices to people’s cars without court approval? The ACLU filed a brief in the Supreme Court explaining why this violates the Constitution.

Does it offend you that your own government claims the right, at the international border, to open up your laptop and look through all of your family photographs, medical records and correspondence, all without any reason to believe you’ve done anything wrong? The ACLU is suing to put a stop to this exact practice.

Are you against the government reading people’s emails and text messages without a warrant? The ACLU has asked Congress to update our privacy laws.

So put the tinfoil back in the kitchen drawer. It won’t help you. Instead, join us in our work to ensure that technology isn’t abused to deprive us of our rights. Friend us on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter. Take action in our action center. And donate to support our work.

Help protect our fundamental freedoms. Donate to the ACLU.
