Friday was a slow news day in DC.
Said absolutely no one.
Anyone looking to bury bad news had a perfect opportunity on Friday afternoon in wake of what I’m dubbing Resign-A-Palooza. In the morning, President Obama announced that Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki was resigning in the wake of scandal at the VA hospital in Phoenix, Ariz.
Several hours later, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney surprised reporters during the daily briefing by announcing his plans to leave. Josh Earnest, Carney’s deputy, is the new Press Secretary.
Those stories will probably stick around for a couple more days, but that’s not all that’s going on in Washington this week. Here’s the big news in our world:
Monday, June 2nd
LGBT and Women’s Rights
The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Financial and Contracting Oversight will hold a roundtable discussion titled “Campus Sexual Assault: The Role of Title IX.” The ACLU will be submitting a statement for the record.
Tuesday, June 3rd
Campaign Finance/Voting
The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing titled “Examining a Constitutional Amendment to Restore Democracy to the American People.” The ACLU will submit written testimony.
Location Privacy
The Privacy, Technology and the Law Subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on the Location Privacy Protection Act of 2014.
Housing
The Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee will mark up the Fiscal 2015 Transportation-HUD appropriations bill.
Immigration / Juvenile Justice
The Commerce, Justice and Science, and Related Agencies Subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee will mark up the Fiscal 2015 Commerce-Justice-Science appropriations bill.”
Wednesday, June 4th
FBI Oversight
The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on oversight of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. FBI Director James Comey is expected to testify.
Thursday, June 5th
Housing
The Senate Appropriations Committee will mark up the Fiscal 2015 Transportation-HUD appropriations bill.
Immigration / Juvenile Justice
The Senate Appropriations Committee will mark up the Fiscal 2015 Commerce-Justice-Science appropriations bill.
