OVERVIEW

The National Political Advocacy Department of the ACLU’s National Office seeks applicants for a full-time Immigrants’ Rights Policy Analyst in its Washington D.C. office.

Reporting to the Director of Immigration Policy & Campaigns and working with the Federal Policy Counsel and the Immigration Advocacy and Policy Strategist, the Policy Analyst will be an energetic, thoughtful, and committed advocate to provide support to our federal and state advocacy efforts. By working on pending federal and state legislation, advocacy, research, and policy proposals, the Policy Analyst will think creatively to help identify opportunities and implement ACLU campaigns to protect and advance immigrants’ rights.

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITES

  • As assigned by the Director of Immigration Policy and Campaigns, serve as a representative of the ACLU at external and internal meetings, including responding to questions from external sources regarding pending federal and state issues.
  • Work collaboratively with ACLU affiliates and staff across the National Political Advocacy Department and other departments towards shared advocacy objectives and to prepare for and participate in public speaking engagements.
  • Draft, proofread, and format documents, including policy memos, talking points, correspondence to Congress and federal and state agencies, and other research documents as requested on federal and state legislative, regulatory, and policy issues.
  • Help coordinate and participate in national coalitions focused on civil liberties and civil rights issues.
  • Plan and execute advocacy events such as call-in days, congressional briefings, advocacy days on Capitol Hill, and rallies to further advocacy goals.
  • Work with Communications staff to publish blogs and promote advocacy issues on social media.
  • Track, summarize, and archive federal and state legislation, regulations, and other policy developments by attending Congressional hearings, briefings and using specialized congressional databases, as well as monitoring media, social media, and government websites.
  • Assemble and organize informational packets, binders, and other documents as necessary.
  • Work with the Immigration Policy and Advocacy Strategist and other ACLU staff across departments to shape, implement, and coordinate advocacy campaign strategy and logistics as necessary.
  • Train interns and coordinate their work.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office by using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability, socio-economic circumstance, immigration status, and record of arrest or conviction.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years of work experience, preferably working on immigrants’ rights and federal or state policy.
  • Strong organizational skills with superb attention to detail; ability to synthesize information and follow through and complete assignments.
  • Working knowledge of the federal legislative process preferred; Hill experience a plus.
  • Ability to multitask, take direction and feedback, and meet strict deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to make connections and foster collaboration with internal and external partners.
  • Must be a strong project manager who is comfortable taking the lead and coordinating efforts within and across teams.
  • Exceptional writing and verbal skills; strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to utilize and master basic federal legislative, regulatory, and policy process and research tools, such as CQ, Bloomberg, and/or Knowlegis.  Knowledge of Bluebook forms for legal citations a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software and Internet research tools.
  • Commitment to the mission and goals of the ACLU.

 

COMPENSATION

The ACLU offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and benefits package, commensurate with experience and within parameters of the ACLU compensation scale.
