These May 11, 2017 comments from the ACLU to the Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Community Living urge the agency to re-include demographic questions relating to sexual orientation and gender identity in the National Survey of Older Americans Act Participants (NSOAAP). Since 2014, the NSOAAP, which provides critical data on whether federally funded aging programs reach all older adults, included LGBT demographic questions—however, these questions were removed in the latest version of the survey. The comments urges that the demographic questions be re-included because of the unique challenges faced by LGBT older adults as they age. The comments additionally urge the survey to be conducted in a manner that protects the privacy of the respondents.
