ACLU Letter Calling On U.S. House Leadership To Order Committee Investigations into U.S. Capitol Attack

Document Date: January 15, 2021

In this letter, the ACLU urges the House of Representatives to fulfill its constitutional obligation to investigate the serious allegations facing certain lawmakers and hold its own members accountable if any member conspired in the attack on the Capitol — and on the constitutional and democratic duty to certify states’ Electoral College results that Congress was undertaking at the very moment of the attack. The letter calls on House leadership to order committees to investigate allegations of lawmakers' involvement and to recommend any necessary disciplinary action.

The gravity of the events on January 6, 2021 already prompted the ACLU to call for both the impeachment of President Trump and the appointment of a special counsel to investigate, and if warranted, prosecute President Trump and his associates for their attempts to subvert the outcome of the election.
