This ACLU letter was submitted for the record on a March 1, 2016 hearing in the House Judiciary Committee on “The Encryption Tightrope: Balancing Americans' Security and Privacy.” The letter responds to the FBI’s attempts to effectively compel Apple to develop software that would allow the FBI to hack into the phone recovered from one of the San Bernardino shooters. The ACLU opposes the FBI’s actions, and urges the committee to reject any proposal that would grant the FBI the authority to conscript technology suppliers into hacking or building a backdoor into the devices of users.
