ACLU Letter to Senate Urging Opposition to Federally-Funded Private and Religious School Vouchers

Senate Amendment No. 587 to S. 160, the District of Columbia House Voting Rights Act of 2009

On behalf of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a non-partisanorganization with more than a half million activists and members and 53affiliates nationwide, we urge you to oppose any amendment that wouldcreate, expand, or continue any federally-funded private and religious schoolvoucher program, including Senator Ensign’s recently filed amendmentnumber 587, as the Senate considers S. 160, District of Columbia HouseVoting Rights Act of 2009. The Senate should not create, expand, orcontinue any program in the District of Columbia that would funnel scarcefederal taxpayer funds to unaccountable private and religious schools.
