ACLU Letter Urging Support for the Fair and Accurate Census Act (S. 4048)

The ACLU sent this letter asking Senators to cosponsor the Fair and Accurate Census Act (S. 4048), introduced by Senators Harris and Schatz, and support inclusion of its provisions in the next COVID-19 relief package that will extend the statutory reporting deadlines for the Census Bureau to provide apportionment and redistricting data by 120 days and enact other measures to ensure a complete and accurate count. Against the advice of career staff, the Bureau announced on August 3 that it would be ending the count on September 30, in an attempt to ram through the census, despite a historic undercount due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
