Baltimore-Varmus Coalition Letter From Biomedical Scientists on Patent Eligibility Concerns

On June 13, 2019, more than 80 prominent biomedical scientists and Nobel Laureates, led by Drs. David Baltimore and Harold Varmus, objected to the House and Senate Judiciary Committees’ proposals to alter patent eligibility criteria. In the letter, the signatories expressed concern that legislation would produce a detrimental effect on the conduct of basic scientific research. They recommended that Congress direct the National Academy of Sciences to thoroughly study these potential consequences before enacting any legislation.
