This September 2016 letter, signed by the ACLU, urges the Federal Communications Commission chairman to reject calls to weaken the rule on “Protecting the Privacy of Customers of Broadband and Other Telecommunications Services.” Some opponents to the rule—which would prevent broadband internet service providers from disclosing their customer’s private information to third parties without their consent, in most cases—have urged the FCC to weaken some of it’s important protections. This letter urges the FCC to resist calls to require opt-in consent only for sensitive information or to create a carve out for “de-identified” data, and it urges the FCC to prohibit mandatory arbitration clauses.
