In this open statement, the ACLU joined a coalition of human rights and civil liberties organizations, trade associations, and individual experts to express deep concern about comments made by DHS Secretary John Kelly, suggesting his department could require non-citizens to provide passwords to their social media accounts as a condition of entering the country. Kelly made the comments during a House Homeland Security Committee hearing on Feb. 7. Such a proposal would be a direct assault on fundamental rights to privacy, freedom of expression and the press, access to information, rights of association, and religious liberty.
