Sign-on Statement Regarding Community Resolution Initiative

The terrible attacks of September 11, 2001 amounted to a brutal assault on the American people. While we support the need for focused efforts to reduce the risk of future attacks, we are deeply concerned that our own government has taken actions which have seriously eroded the rights, liberties and freedoms that are at the very core of the American way of life.

We believe that provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act, rewritten FBI guidelines and numerous executive orders have rolled back fundamental protections and jeopardized basic freedoms. We believe that these measures are out of step with the critical need to preserve our core principles, constitutional freedoms and adherence to human rights even in times of crisis.

Given these concerns, we support the rising tide of efforts to defend the Constitution and Bill of Rights represented in grassroots and community efforts to pass resolutions in support of our civil liberties and civil rights.
