Submission to UN CERD on List of Themes for Upcoming U.S. Report

On January 20, 2022, the ACLU and the Sentencing Project made a submission to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) regarding NGO contributions to the List of Themes for the upcoming U.S. report. The letter urges the CERD to focus on racial disparities in sentencing and imprisonment as part of its review of the U.S. government periodic report which is now scheduled for August 2022. The submission recommends that the U.S. government amend its sentencing laws to account for racial disparities and rectify the disproportionate impact these laws have had on Black people and other people of color
