The ACLU urged Senators on September 13 to vote yes on an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018 that would limit the transfers of certain military weapons and equipment from war zones to law enforcement and communities. Sponsored by Senators Rand Paul (R-KY), Brian Schatz (D-HI), and Ron Wyden (D-OR), the amendment would subject programs and funds under the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Justice to greater restrictions and oversight, given their role in militarizing law enforcement. The Senators introduced the amendment a little more than a month after President Donald Trump issued an executive order that eliminated oversight that was put in place in 2015.
