We face an unprecedented opportunity to achieve the freedom to marry for same-sex couples throughout the country. The historic 2013 U.S. Supreme Court decision, in which the ACLU represented Edie Windsor, struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and is paving the way for equality for lesbian and gay couples across America. In the past decade, same-sex couples have secured the freedom to marry in 36 states and the District of Columbia, but for a full civil liberties victory we need to strike down the remaining barriers to the freedom to marry in states across the country.
