On September 19, 2017, the ACLU joined the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and over 200 additional organizations to send a letter to Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. The letter expresses concern regarding changes made by ED to student loan servicing guidance and procurement requirements, debt collection contracting, and the delay of critical regulations. Unfortunately, these changes would exacerbate inequalities for Black and Latino borrowers and make the already unfair and ineffective student loan servicing system even more harmful to all students and families seeking higher education.
