Coalition Letter Opposing S. 1693, the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act

In this coalition letter, signers, including the ACLU, wrote to Senate leadership to convey concerns with S. 1693, the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act, which would create substantial new criminal and civil liability for Internet intermediaries – such as website operators, email providers, and messaging services – that host third-party speech. This would lead to increased censorship across the web and discourage proactive efforts by intermediaries to identify and remove trafficking material from their services. The bill would also undermine key features of Section 230 of the Communications Act that protect free speech online.
