Letter from the ACLU and Human Rights Watch to the European Commission Urging Reexamination of the Privacy Shield Agreement and the U.S.-EU Umbrella Agreement

This February 28, 2017 letter from the ACLU and Human Rights Watch urges European Union officials to reexamine whether or not the Privacy Shield Agreement and U.S.-EU Umbrella Agreement sufficiently protect the fundamental rights of people in the European Union. The letter calls in to question U.S. government assurances underpinning the agreements, based on recent executive orders and a deterioration in existing U.S. oversight and accountability structures.
