LGBTQ Letter on FIRST STEP Act and Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act

The ACLU joined this letter urging the Senate to pass comprehensive criminal justice reform legislation, including reforms to federal sentencing laws. The letter illustrates the harmful effects of excessive sentences for LGBTQ people, who are disproportionally incarcerated, and urges the Senate to make meaningful reform by advancing the bipartisan sentencing provisions in S. 1917, the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act of 2017.  The letter also explains the flaws in the FIRST STEP Act (S. 2795), legislation that lacks needed reforms for sentencing laws.
