Sign-On Letter Urging President Obama to Support FOIA Reform

Document Date: March 16, 2016

The ACLU joined dozens of other open government groups in this March 16 sign-on letter to President Obama, urging him to express support for FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) reform. Specifically, the letter asks him to repudiate positions in a Department of Justice memo – recently made public and obtained in response to a FOIA lawsuit – opposing a FOIA reform bill introduced in 2014. The letter asks him to instead publicly and unequivocally endorse the bipartisan FOIA Improvement Act (S. 337), which passed the Senate by unanimous consent on March 15. The letter was sent during Sunshine Week – a nationwide initiative to draw attention to the importance of open government and the need to strengthen transparency at all governmental levels.
