WASHINGTON — The Senate Intelligence Committee will vote on the nomination of Gina Haspel to lead the CIA in a closed door meeting Wednesday at 9 a.m.
Christopher Anders, deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Washington Legislative Office, said:
“Voting in secret without enough information on Gina Haspel’s involvement in torture and no clarity on her views is an abdication of the Senate’s constitutional role of advice and consent.
“With the many substantive concerns of this nominee’s fitness to serve as CIA director, a secret confirmation process with the nominee herself deciding what materials about her will stay secret, just three hours of public testimony, and only 10 minutes per senator of closed-door questioning adds even more insult to injury.
“Constituents, who have been making nonstop calls demanding senators stand strong against torture, advocates, and the ACLU will never forget our representatives’ commitment or betrayal to democratic values this November.”
