ACLU Files to Get Comey’s Memo on Trump Conversation
NEW YORK — The American Civil Liberties Union today filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the Justice Department and FBI seeking the memo by former FBI Director James Comey describing his February meeting with President Trump in which Trump reportedly asked Comey to drop the investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and his ties to Russia. The request also covers any other documents related to communications between Trump and Comey.
“There are serious concerns that the president may have improperly tried to obstruct an FBI investigation. The public has a right to know if that’s true,” said Hina Shamsi, director of the ACLU National Security Project.
The ACLU has also called for the appointment of a special prosecutor and the creation of a select congressional committee to investigate the Trump campaign’s relationship with Russia. On Monday, the ACLU filed a FOIA request for records related to Trump’s dismissal of Comey amid concerns that Comey was fired in an effort to derail the investigation.
